As a senior business administration major at Bushnell, Jessica had little knowledge of the inner workings of a publishing house, but her continued love for reading stemming from her childhood inspired her to pursue opportunities that aligned with her passion. During her internship at Harvest House, Jessica found herself immersed in a myriad of tasks across several different teams, reflecting the dynamic nature of the publishing industry. From editing manuscripts to creating presentations, her diverse workload provided invaluable insights into the multifaceted world of publishing.

Reflecting on her journey, she expressed gratitude for the opportunity to develop essential skills and gain a professional perspective on workplace dynamics, emphasizing that the skills she learned will be invaluable wherever she goes.   • Our very own Dr. A.J. Swoboda, renowned theologian and professor, recently released his eleventh book, "The Gift of Thorns." In this latest book,  Dr. Swoboda touches on themes of navigating the complexity of desires and the role of God in that process. 

“The Gift of Thorns” aims to inspire readers with a new understanding of desires; it emphasizes that God is not interested in the death of our desires, but in their resurrection. Dr. Swoboda addresses relevant cultural and societal concerns, providing clarity on navigating desires in alignment with the teachings of Jesus.

His role as a professor at Bushnell University has deeply influenced his perspective on suffering and redemption, which shaped the narrative of his latest book. Dr. Swoboda emphasizes his commitment to serving the church through theology, describing himself as a “low-level theologian” dedicated to using his work in the academy to benefit God’s people.

  • Alumna Janel (Fetters) Coburn ’14 may have started out as a psychology major at Bushnell University, but she quickly discovered the positive impact she could have on children through education.

After graduating with her degree and license, Janel found unique ways to support and encourage students of all ages while teaching everything from Pre-K to 8th grade in California public schools. Moving back to Eugene, she began to teaching at Eugene Christian School and is currently serving as a middle school humanities teacher. 

Janel sees the true honor of being a teacher within the positive influence that she can have on students' lives. In addition to being a positive mentor that encourages students to engage with the world, Janel expresses that at a private Christian school setting like ECS, she and other teachers can help foster the ways students think about God, faith, and ways to impact the world with their gifts. According to Janel, both the Education and Communication programs at Bushnell (then NCU) provided her with skills she uses every single day in her role helping shape the future through her students. 

For students interested in pursuing a career in education, Janel states, "Most importantly, I would encourage students to keep their minds focused on the work they’re really setting out to do – shape young minds and make a positive impact on the world. Don’t get caught up in the daily routines, but instead keep your eyes trained on the big picture: being a trustworthy adult that genuinely cares for each student."

🔹 EWEB Water work to provide new water and sprinkler service lines to Goodrich Hall
🔹 Sampling of siding and stone materials
🔹 Working on tower bell and cross lighting
