Job Summary

Bushnell University seeks to fill a strategic lead music faculty position in its School of Music and Performing Arts.  The School of Music and Performing Arts is home to undergraduate music programs and co-curricular music performance programs that the University views as “strategic enrollment opportunity programs.”  The successful candidate for this position will champion the departmental programs in music and worship and will foster excellence among students both in the academic study of and in performance/leadership in music and worship.  The appointee will be responsible for routine teaching in the general music curriculum (e.g., theory, music appreciation, music technology, performance) and in areas of personal expertise.  The appointee will mentor students, individually and in groups and engage in marketing and recruitment efforts of the University.

As the lead faculty member of the School of Music the person in this role will administer departmental budgets and will coordinate and supervise departmental staff, adjunct faculty, and private instructors.  He/She will demonstrate dynamic and visionary leadership in growing the Bushnell music program through curriculum design, effective teaching and mentoring, and networking with experts in the field.

Successful performance in this position will be evaluated in terms of 1) innovative leadership for the department; 2) significant and sustained enrollment growth in departmental programs; 3) enhanced departmental and university standing within the local and global Christian community.

Position Duties & Responsibilities

General for all Faculty

  • Maintain a routine teaching load in the School of Music as agreed with the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
  • As a ‘teacher-scholar’ actively engage with students in collaborative research and learning activities.
  • Provide a solid role model of wisdom, faith, and service.
  • Maintain and post regular office hours as specified in the Faculty Handbook.
  • Attend all regular and special faculty meetings.
  • Serve on faculty committees, as assigned by the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty within Faculty Handbook guidelines.
  • Submit updated course syllabi each semester to the office of the VPAA for each course taught.
  • Complete embedded course assessment and/or program assessment activities in TaskStream.
  • Facilitate the evaluation of each of your classes each semester and contribute to the evaluation of the curriculum and instruction, ensuring the delivery of quality academic programs.
  • Contribute to development of library resources in area of teaching expertise.
  • Follow the current Faculty Handbook as it pertains to faculty roles and responsibilities.
  • Interact with the Registrar’s office in transcript evaluation and recording of student progress, as required.
  • Actively participate in marketing of the programs as well as forming partnerships with colleagues and students where appropriate.
  • Contribute to the integration of faith and learning by addressing this issue in class and in curriculum standards.

Specific to this Position

  • Oversee and administrate departmental programs and budgets.
  • Supervise departmental staff, faculty, and private instructors.
  • Champion the music and worship program both internally (among students, faculty, staff) and externally (recruitment/admissions, church constituencies, community partners, etc.).
  • Mentor student musicians and worship leaders, both individually and in groups (outreach teams, worship/praise bands, etc.), to increase their performance skills and achieve a strong level of excellence.
  • Represent the School of Music on the Dean’s Cabinet.
  • Fulfill any other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Experience and Qualification Requirements

Minimal requirements include a Master’s degree in an area of music and performance.  A doctoral degree in music and/or worship arts or a related academic discipline is highly desired, along with teaching experience in higher education and demonstrated organizational/administrative skills.  Must demonstrate a high level of personal musicianship (instrumental and vocal) and excellent communication skills.  Experience in leading, growing, and energizing music/worship program, especially in a local church setting, is required; also skills in and knowledge of music technology for worship (Pro Tools and Finale software, equipment, digital soundboards, computer notation, etc.) and established networks with other professionals in the area of music and worship.

Ability to utilize Windows based software including, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.  Experience utilizing e-mail for the purposes of organizational communications.  Listening skills and the ability to speak and write clearly are essential to the position.  Individual must possess exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.

Candidate must be a member of and actively engaged in a Christian congregation. Must also be able to identify with and support the Bushnell Theological Context for Community statement.
