James Watson, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of English and Director of the Song Nai Rhee Honors Program

Ph.D., Baylor University
B.A., Portland State University

Dr. Watson’s research interests cover the breadth of the truly breathtaking twentieth century—exploring the ways writers have made meaning in the wake of the “crisis of representation” brought on by the loss of faith in meta-narrative as well as in the very power of words to signify. He has published on Cormac McCarthy, Hemingway, and Derrida.

Besides his scholarly work, Watson’s first novel, A Window on the Door, has been praised by critics as “a quiet, beautiful, stunning book,” and “tense, poetic, and heart-stopping.” He has written numerous scripts for short films and videos, and is currently engaged in the development of an episodic dramatic television series.

In addition to teaching and writing, Dr. Watson is privileged to serve as the symposiarch of Bushnell’s growing Honors Program.

Otherwise, he relishes every moment with his wife and five sons and cat and garden and antique motorbike.
